한국어에서 '자기연민'은 거의 욕이다. "쟤 자기연민에 빠졌어"가 칭찬인 경우는 없다. In Korean, jagi-yeonmin — self-pity, or literally "self-compassion" — is close to an insult. "She's wallowing in jagi-yeonmin" has never once been a compliment.
그런데 영어권 임상에서 self-compassion은 치료 목표다. 키우라고 가르친다. 같은 말이 한쪽에서는 병이고, 한쪽에서는 약이다. And yet in English-language clinical work, self-compassion is a treatment goal. It is something we teach people to grow. The same word is the illness on one side and the medicine on the other.
한 단어를 나눠 쓰는 두 개념Two Concepts Sharing One Word
사실상 번역의 문제다. self-compassion에는 '자기자비'라는 학술 번역어가 있긴 하다. 다만 '자비'가 일상에서 잘 쓰지 않는 말이다 보니, 상담실에서조차 그냥 '자기연민'이라 부르는 경우가 많다. It is, in effect, a translation problem. There is an academic Korean term for self-compassion — jagi-jabi, using jabi, compassion in the Buddhist sense. But jabi is not a word people use in daily life, so even inside the consulting room it often gets called jagi-yeonmin instead.
그런데 한국어에서 흉볼 때 쓰는 그 자기연민은 self-pity에 가깝다. 전혀 다른 두 개념이 한 단어를 나눠 쓰고 있는 셈이다. The problem is that the jagi-yeonmin Koreans use when criticizing someone is much closer to self-pity. Two entirely different concepts are sharing a single word.
내담자에게 자기 자신에게 조금 더 다정해져 보자고 권하면, 그 말이 "네 자신을 불쌍히 여기며 주저앉아 있어라"로 들릴 수 있다. 권하는 사람과 듣는 사람이 서로 다른 단어를 쓰고 있는 것이다. When I suggest to a client that we work on being kinder to themselves, what can land is "sit down and feel sorry for yourself." The person offering and the person hearing are using two different words.
역수입되는 개념Concepts Imported Back
미국에서 한국인으로 심리상담을 공부하다 보면 묘하게 화가 나는 지점이 있다. 서양 학자들이 새로운 발견처럼 소개하는 개념이 알고 보면 이미 우리 쪽에 있던 것이고, 우리는 그걸 다시 역수입하느라 오히려 헷갈리는 상황이 있다. Studying psychotherapy in the U.S. as a Korean brings a particular kind of irritation. A concept gets introduced by Western scholars as a new discovery, and it turns out to have been on our side of the world all along — and then we import it back, which is where the confusion starts.
대표적으로 self-compassion이 그렇다. 자비(慈悲)는 불교 용어고, self-compassion은 그 자비를 서구 심리학이 가져다 만든 개념이다. 가져가면서 불교를 지우고, 척도와 프로토콜을 붙여 과학의 모습을 입혔다. Self-compassion is the clearest case. Jabi (慈悲) is a Buddhist term, and self-compassion is what Western psychology made after taking it. In the taking, the Buddhism was erased and scales and protocols were attached to give it the shape of science.
과학적 검증 자체는 바람직하다. 다만, 전쟁과 IMF를 지나며 한국이 정신을 돌아볼 겨를이 없던 사이, 그 자비가 서양 라벨을 달고 "선진 사상"으로 여겨진다. The scientific validation itself is a good thing. But while Korea passed through war and the IMF crisis with no room to look after its own inner life, that same jabi came back wearing a Western label, treated as advanced thinking from elsewhere.
이 자리에서 상담이 하는 일What Therapy Does From Here
그래서 한국어로 상담을 할 때는 단어 하나를 그냥 지나칠 수 없다. 자기 자신을 대하는 태도를 다루는 작업은, 그 태도를 부를 이름부터 함께 정하는 일에서 시작하기도 한다. So when the work happens in Korean, a single word cannot simply be passed over. Working on how someone treats themselves sometimes begins with agreeing on what to call that treatment in the first place.
내가 상담에서 권하는 것은 자기 자신을 불쌍히 여기는 일이 아니다. 힘든 시기를 지나는 친구에게 건넬 법한 말을, 자기 자신에게도 건넬 수 있게 되는 일에 가깝다. 그 둘은 한국어에서 같은 단어를 쓰고 있지만, 하는 일은 정반대다. What I am inviting is not pitying yourself. It is closer to becoming able to say to yourself what you would say to a friend going through something hard. In Korean those two share a word. What they do is the opposite.
한쪽에서는 약이다. The same word is the illness on one side
and the medicine on the other.
