Some children hear this sentence as love. Others hear it and their skin crawls.
It may genuinely come from love and worry. The feeling itself — that a parent is glad when their child is happy — is natural enough.
But the moment this sentence becomes a standing rule inside the relationship, the daughter's happiness turns into the condition holding up the mother's.
Who Sets the Standard for Happiness
It gets more complicated when the mother also sets the standard for that happiness. Which career the child chooses, who they see, where they live — each becomes a variable determining the parent's wellbeing.
What a child raised inside this describes resembles what people commonly call narcissistic harm. The parent's feelings come before my own. If I say what I want, the parent collapses. Rather than being accepted as I am, I have to become the version of me the parent needs.
So it makes sense that someone reading an online list of traits for a "covert narcissistic parent" thinks: that is my mother.
I have read many accounts from people who suffered in childhood and say their parent was simply harmful, and that being told "they're your parent, understand them" hurt them further. I think it is entirely possible that their parent really was, and that they really did suffer for it.
To have come into the world through that parent's flesh and blood, and then to have to grow through your most fragile and powerless years under them, is a suffering I cannot presume to imagine. That such a person is here now, breathing and living, is itself likely the result of enormous courage and endurance.
The Name for It: Enmeshment
At the same time, filing an entire relationship under the single frame of "narcissistic parent" means losing things. Whether the parent respects the child's boundaries, whether they can look at their own patterns, whether a different kind of relationship is possible between them — all of that has to be looked at too.
Family therapy has a name for the relational pattern that produces this kind of suffering: enmeshment. Enmeshment is a state in which the psychological boundaries within a family have blurred so far that separating one person's feelings, needs, and choices from another's becomes difficult. A parent's happiness and anxiety tangle into the child's life, and the child can end up responsible for the parent's emotional stability.
Strictly speaking, narcissistic personality disorder and enmeshment can occur together. But given how low the prevalence of personality disorders is, it is more appropriate to hold open the possibility of enmeshment first.
When It Reads as Warmth and Family Love
In Korean family culture in particular, enmeshment between parent and child is easily read as close jeong or as family love.
Jeong and family love are not the problem. A child having to carry the parent's feelings as well, and facing moral judgment under the name of filial impiety the moment they try to choose their own life — that is a serious problem in a person's life.
Whatever the cause, the suffering the child went through is real. Even if the parent believed it was love, that belief cannot erase the years the child spent folding away their feelings and hiding what they wanted.
That my parent loves me, and that the shape of that love suffocated me, can both be true at the same time.
Where My Attention Goes
My own attention goes to what sits in more ambiguous territory: relationships where the suffering was undeniable and the parent was also inside suffering of their own, where it is unclear who exactly is to be blamed and how.
I want to understand these without settling anything too quickly — reading them the way fingertips read a page. And I hope that in doing so, something about this era becomes understandable too.
That my parent loves me, and that the shape of that love
suffocated me, can both be true at once.
