The double empathy problem: the breakdown sits between two people, not inside one

목차On this page

For a long time psychology held this view: neurodivergent people cannot read other people's emotions. They have a deficit in empathy. So when communication fails, the problem lies on the neurodivergent side.

The more informed version goes: they are overloaded, so they have no capacity left and their response is slow. In a society that understands autism this little, even that is something to be grateful for. But it is still a deficit framework in which the neurodivergent person is the one who has to explain themselves.

The Theory That Held for Decades

For decades the dominant theory explaining autism was Theory of Mind. Proposed by Baron-Cohen and colleagues in 1985, it held that autistic people have a deficit in the ability to infer other people's mental states.

That frame governed both clinic and research for decades. Autistic people became beings who could not empathize, and the goal of treatment naturally became getting them to match neurotypical communication. Changing the autistic person was the treatment.

The Premise Nobody Questioned

But the theory rests on a premise: that neurotypical communication is "normal" and the autistic way is a "deficit."

Whether that premise was correct went unasked for a long time. Autistic people's own voices were systematically excluded from the research, and neurotypical researchers observed and defined autistic people from the outside.

Milton이 뒤집은 것What Milton Turned Over

Milton(2012)은 이 전제를 뒤집었다. Milton (2012) turned that premise over. To the same degree that autistic people fail to read neurotypical people, neurotypical people fail to read autistic people. The breakdown in communication is not one person's deficit but a disjuncture between two people. He called this the double empathy problem.

The location of the problem moved from inside one brain to the place where two people meet.

    "Double"이 왜 중요한가Why "double" matters

Because the neurotypical way is defined as social "normal," only the autistic person looks like the problem when communication fails. In reality it runs both ways. Neurotypical people also fail to read autistic communication. That failure simply never gets named as a problem.

Though the Failure Is Asymmetric

Just as neurodivergent people struggle to read neurotypical people, neurotypical people struggle to read neurodivergent people. To be precise, though, the degree is asymmetric.

Neurodivergent people have spent their whole lives adjusting to the neurotypical way. Neurotypical people have almost never attempted the adjustment in the other direction.

The breakdown is not inside one person. It is between two.

Difference, Not Deficit

This can sound like word play. But which lens a clinician uses has a direct effect on how the client comes to see themselves.

"I am a person without empathy" and "I am a person who communicates differently" are entirely different understandings of oneself.

What Changes in the Room

Under this frame there is no need to see an autistic client as something to be fixed. The question shifts from "how can they communicate more like a neurotypical person" to "how can these two people come to understand each other's ways."

What changes is no longer one person but two. In couples work especially.

"I am a person without empathy" and "I am a person who
communicates differently" are entirely different self-understandings.
